Success to Significance – A Life of Fulfillment
What is your definition of success? That is the question. It’s almost like writing a mission statement. Your definition should include all the accomplishments you wish to reach. Our standard definition of success is money, fame and influence. But, is that rich enough to lead a life of fulfillment? For example, take a look at Deepak Chopra’s definition, the progressive realization of worthy goals, and the ability to love and have compassion, to be in touch with the creative source inside you and to ultimately move from success to significance.
Significance is that of moving beyond the material success and actually concentrate on satisfying endeavors with a more humanistic approach. Significance means importance and/or consequence. Material success is without significance and ultimately is not fulfilling. Working towards significance you become greater than your success and you no longer need that spotlight to drive you.
People like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and Deepak Chopra do not think about retiring and any age. They keep fine-tuning their long term goals. Money is simply a byproduct of that process. Financial security is very important, but the secret to success goes much deeper than that. Pursue excellence, fulfillment, and creativity.
Creativity; the ability to transcend traditional ideas, rules, patterns, relationships or the like, and to create meaningful new ideas, forms, methods, or interpretations. Freedom of thought with an open mind and curiosity have become very rare these days. When we are growing up we have a core consciousness that is transformed and programmed by the social conditioning that instant gratification is the way to happiness. What happened to our imagination, insight, intuition, choosing, love, compassion and understanding? We need to find all of these again and break open.
Successes to significance requires vision, innovation and triumph. Read, ask yourself how you can turn situations into opportunities and make an effort to connect with those you have the least in common with and try to understand their point of view and their value. Ultimately, keep an open mind!
