Does your family have a planned escape route in case of a fire in your home? We never expect for such a disaster to ever happento us but with just a little planning can help protect your family from the devistating effects of a fire.
Make it a family project to map out escape routes from each room in the home, designate a meeting point outside of the home and post the escape routes in each of the bedrooms.
The majority home fires start in the kitchen. Here are some steps you can take to prevent a fire.
1. Never leave food unattended while cooking on the stove top.
2. keep clutter away from cooking sources ( towels, hot mitts, napkins)
3. Do not wear loose clothing while cooking.
3. Desinate a kid free zone three feet from the cooking area.
4. never disable the smoke alarm in the kitchen area.
5. Never use water or a fire extinguisher in a grease fire. Instead, turn off the heat source, and cover the fire with a lid or a moist towel to extinguish the flames. Throwing water on a grease fire will cause the fire to spread.
Currently there are political action groups lobbying in Washington D.C. to create legislation to mandate fire sprinkler systems in all new homes. On the surface this appears to be a great idea. But what would the additional cost of this $25,000 to $30,000 system do to the affordability of homes. This may be a reality in the near future, but for now we can practice the steps above to help protect our loved ones.
